![]() ![]() In one version of the myth, Isis and Osiris fell. Osiris and Isis were the parents of Horus. As a chthonic (earth) deity, he also became. Osiris married his sister, Isis, and his younger brother, Set, their sister, Nephthys. Osiris played an important role in Egyptian mythology as the god of the underworld and judge of the dead. He converted the Egyptian people into civilized ways. Geb and Nut bore Osiris, Isis, Set, and Nephthys. Osiris was a talented musician who came to rule an Egyptian land afflicted by cannibalism and other ills. They, in turn, gave birth to Geb, the earth, and his sister, Nut, the sky. From his seed Shu, the airs, and, his sister, Tefnut, the moisture, were created. Nubt, with its vast cemetery at nearby Naqdah, was the principal predynastic centre in Upper Egypt. The worship of Seth originally centred at Nubt (Greek Ombos), near present-day kh, on the western bank of the Nile River. The creation of the world in this cosmology began with the masturbation of Ra or Atum. Seth, also called Setekh, Setesh, or Set, ancient Egyptian god, patron of the 11th nome, or province, of Upper Egypt. There the followers of the creator god, Ra, first achieved the unification of upper and lower Egypt and set up a capital which remained the major theological and academic center through many dynasties. The cosmology in which Osiris originated was located at Heliopolis. Although the Osiris story represents only one stream of a complex and multifaceted ancient Egyptian religion, the story is perhaps the Egyptian myth that most permeates later religions, alchemy, and the psychology of Carl Jung. ![]()
